My First Knitting Injury

I miss knitting.

I’ve been doing it sporadically as of late and I miss it. I started a new job and I love my new job, but that means I don’t get much time for knitting. The commute is fine, but since it’s on the subway, I am petrified of losing my knitting needles.

But I digress, last week, I was working on one of my Totoros and the tension was particularly tight, so I thought I could push it through with my fingernail. This lack of foresight probably lead to the extinction of morons like me back in the day.

As a result, I pushed my little 2.00 mm DPNs underneath my FINGERNAIL. AAAUGGHHHHH!! It was awful. And did I have to play the piano next day? Yes.

It almost goes halfway down the nail!!! AAAAUGGHHH!!

They should put safety warnings on these things.

Anyway, as I was explaining, I haven’t been knitting as much. I think I’m still up to sixteen Totoros and 17-19 still have no eyes. I hate doing eyes, have I mentioned that? But the great thing about knitting, people share wonderful things on my facebook wall. I’m not being sarcastic either. Look, a whole post on MATH knitting!

I can imagine hanging this on doorknobs...

Oh! And speaking of injuries. You know what else happened? DPN theft!!

Well, OK, probably not, but the rotten kids lost one of my DPNs!! The 2.00 mm bamboo DPN that is about 4″ long. WHY! Now I’m down to FIVE! What am I going to do if I need all six? Ugh. Don’t have kids folks. Not only do they lose things of yours, they also monopolize spousal time!

I was able to convince my wife that it was time for happy fun times, but then youngest came bounding in with her doe-eyes sparkling in full force. There went happy fun times. I need to discipline them more.

Or I need to acquire a knitting-man-cave. My dad had a room that I wasn’t allowed to go into. It was filled with all these small electronic parts because he was useful in the real world and could fix and make practical things.

I still haven’t achieved that level of maturity.

I think I should learn how to crochet too..

I tried to find a picture of cavemen knitting. There aren’t any. UNTAPPED MARKET! (Click to get this pattern on Delicious Crochet)

Anyway, I am still knitting but not as much as I like. And when I come home at night, I’m not exhausted or anything but the children want family time. Back in the day kids watched TV all evening and left the parents alone! Maybe I should get them knitting.

I will leave you with the latest Facebook photo about knitting.

Sorry, can't find the source to this...

Knitting also taught me that I need more space in my house…

  1. I had my first knitting injury last week. I was trying to put a point protector (ha!) on the end of one of my dpns. Instead, I put the dpn right into my finger. Ouch! Fun times with knitting.

  2. Ouch! I don’t think I’ve ever stabbed myself with a knitting needles, but I have overworked my elbow to the point of developing what felt like tennis elbow. Lately, I’ve been crocheting a lot, and my right hand is really sore from being overworked. I’m taking a break from crafting today, sadly. I don’t know how much longer I can take it!

I have to say that your blog is just so much fun. I look forward to future updates because I love knitting and geekery. I’m working on making up a hat pattern for GIR from Invader Zim. The hat itself is mostly finished – just need to sew it together – and I have to devise a strategy for knitting up his eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. It’s fun for the most part, but I’ve never been a huge fan of working through tiny parts and sewing them together. Oh, well. I hope it turns out alright. I plan to post pictures of it and maybe a pattern soon, and it would be awesome if you dropped by to tell me what you think.

    • Oops. I meant to say “with a knitting needle.” Singular. Derp!

    • Alllooo Katy!

Ugh, sorry about your elbow! I didn’t realize one could get all these injuries!

Are you on Ravelry? Yes! Point to your hat! Or if you havea blog! Which, now that I see, you have a website. *laugh* Please tell me when it’s done!

I suck at the sewing parts myself. *sigh*

And I need to post my latest post. It’s been sitting in draft for so long. *sigh*
